The Group of Biofilms of the Centre of Biological Engineering (CEB) at the University of Minho, Portugal, organized a practical course in advanced food biofilm techniques from 15 to 20th of September, in Braga, Portugal. This course was mainly directed to both PhD students and junior researchers working in the biofilms field. In total, there were 17 trainees from different countries. The course consisted both of theoretical and practical lessons. The lectures were given by CEB staff (Joana Azeredo, Maria Olívia Pereira, Mariana Henriques and Nuno Cerca) and from other Institutions (Hülya Olmez - TUBITAK Marmara Research Center, Food Institute, Turkey; Mickaël Desvaux - INRA, France; George Nichas - Agricultural University of Athens, Greece; Nuno Azevedo - LEPABE, University of Porto, Portugal; Anália Lourenço - University of Vigo, Spain). The lecturers covered topics from foodborne biofilms overview, adhesion phenomena, biofilm control, gene expression quantification, multispecies biofilm studies and protein secretion in bacterial surface colonization.
The practical sessions addressed biofilm formation, physico-chemical properties of surfaces and cells, biofilm quantification, biofilm physiology assessment by flow cytometry, biofilm imaging (CSLM), transcriptomics and proteomics.
