The COST Action FA1202 BacFoodNet Workshop on the Current Situation in the Agri-Food Sector Related to Microbial Risk of Fresh Produce and Process Water was held in Murcia Spain on September 24th, 2014. This workshop focused on the microbial risks associated to agricultural and process water from the Agri-food sector. This event was the perfect frame for experts from the Academia as well as from the industry to share ideas and knowledge about the main problems and potential solutions related to water. The subjects were focused on:
1) Foodborne outbreaks liked to fresh produce and the role of water,
2) Microbial status of irrigation water and risk factors for transmission of pathogens to leafy greens during primary production,
3) Use of microbial risk assessment to establish science based criteria for water quality,
4) Microbial and chemical status of process wash water,
5) Role of chlorine as a process wash water disinfection agent,
6) Role of equipment design in fresh produce washing,
7) Selection tool and water tool for water management,
8) Suitability of cold plasma as a disinfection system for process wash water,
9) Efficacy of different disinfection treatments to inactivate enteric virus in the fresh-cut industry,
10) Quality standards for irrigation water management: can they be achieved,
11) Optimal operational conditions applied in the fresh-cut industry,
12) Ultrasounds as a disinfectant technology for irrigation water,
13) Chlorine dioxide as a disinfectant agent for agricultural and process water,
14) Electrochemical disinfection as a disinfectant agent for the fresh-cut industry, and
15) Calcium chloride as a disinfectant agent for the fresh-cut industry.
